High Speed Internet for Tobermory Bay.
All businesses and households now rely on high quality Internet for Business, Learning and Leisure needs. Whilst a lot of the UK, and Scotland has Fibre Optics to the premises now (FTTP), sadly a high percentage of Tobermory has only ‘copper the last mile’ which is known as ADSL/FTTC.
From Wednesday 15th July 2026 we are pleased to announce that with a collaboration between Scottish Sea Farms (SSF), Drimnin Community Broadband, Tobermory Harbour Association (THA), Park Lodge Hotel (PLH) a new Wireless Internet Service Provision (WISP) can deliver 50/50 or 100/100Mbps – that is 100Mbps download, and 100Mbps upload – as long as you can ‘see’ THA or PLH. This Project is being led by Positec (UK) Ltd & Salen Pier Holidays – Peter Stanhope.
Available services…
- 50/50Mbps with unlimited data, high speed router,
- 100/100Mbps with unlimited data, high speed router,
- Greater bandwidth options can be solutioned,
- Advise/Project Management for WiFi6 Access Points, Ethernet Switches, LAN upgrades, VOIP to keep your working Tobermory number, Battery backup (UPS’s) and general IT Infrastructure solutions.
The team members all have a vast experience in data networks, spanning 40+ years.
Some technical information: We are using a ‘leased line’ fibre service direct from Tobermory to the Internet at 1,000/1,000bps, or often known as 1G/1G bps = fast! This is a leased line, so no sharing access to the Internet = no contention on it. This we can share with our customers, including, for example, Salen Pier Holidays having a 100/100Mbps service – for the 24+ guests!

The above speeds are what we have ‘live’ from the service testing on Tuesday 14th July 2026.
No service is ever 100% guaranteed, but we build services to 99.999% reliability. With SSF being a major user of the infrastructure then ‘uptime’ is critical, and monitored 24/7.
Some advantages of this service…
- Much higher speed than ‘copper’ ADSL/FTTC,
- Less affected by lightning – copper cable conducts electricity, fibre/glass cannot,
- Battery backup for all the owned nodes – approx. 20hr prior to a generator being needed,
- Can use WiFi6 access points for the enhanced WiFi experience – speed,
- Community delivered – support technician on the island.
An example of where this helped: During the recent lightning damage in the Salen/Craignure area (June 2026) we enabled a ‘free to use’ emergency WiFi service at Salen Pier Holidays – SSID: ‘Mull Emergency’. Going forward we will be able to offer this at Park Lodge and down at the harbour – helping each other in the time of need. Other sites can be included with the right equipment to assist the coverage.
